🔴 The Moment We're In: One Vote

Yesterday, the Supreme Court struck down Trump's executive order ending birthright citizenship — affirming what the Fourteenth Amendment has meant for 150 years. Chief Justice Roberts wrote for a five-justice majority: children born on American soil are citizens, full stop. It was the right decision. It was also 5-4. Four justices were willing to undo 130 years of precedence to strip citizenship from babies born in this country. And, Justice Kavanaugh's concurrence offered Congress a roadmap to do it legislatively instead.

The same day, the Court upheld that states can place bans on transgender athletes in publicly funded school sports — and last week it handed down a 6-3 ruling giving the president virtually unchecked power to end Temporary Protected Status, stripping protections from 350,000+ Haitian nationals who have lived and worked here lawfully for years.

But this week also brought proof that the fight outside the courts matters. New Jersey passed its healthcare shield law, protecting providers from out-of-state attacks on reproductive and gender-affirming care — because lawyers and advocates showed up and pushed it through. That's what this docket is for. From calling your senator to block Todd Blanche before his July confirmation hearing, to training to file habeas petitions for people the TPS ruling puts at risk, to submitting comments before the OMB weaponizes the federal grant process.

Six actions. Pick one. Start there.

⚡ QUICK ACTIONS

📜 Tell the Senate: Oppose Todd Blanche as Attorney General

📍 L4GG.org/BlockBlanche

Todd Blanche's confirmation hearing is July 15-16 — two weeks away. Under Blanche, the DOJ indicted the Southern Poverty Law Center, created a $1.8 billion taxpayer-funded slush fund that a federal judge is now investigating as potential fraud on the court, moved to vacate the seditious conspiracy convictions of those who attacked the Capitol on January 6, and is running a voter fraud investigation that has yet to produce evidence. Blanche has said publicly that Americans should be "happy" the president is "deeply involved" in DOJ decisions. These positions are disqualifying.

More than 2,000 attorneys have signed our open letter.Add your name before the hearing  at L4GG.org/BlockBlanche!

📜 Volunteer for Election Protection — National Opportunities

📍 L4GG.org/EPVolunteer

As the midterms approach, the administration is ramping up unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud — dedicating multiple federal agencies to an investigation that NBC News reported last week has yet to produce evidence. L4GG is partnering with leading voting rights organizations to deploy volunteer attorneys for election protection this fall.

Opportunities include remote election misinformation monitoring, multi-state purge chasing in priority states including PA, NC, GA, MI, WI, KS, and IA, and in-person poll monitoring and challenger roles. No election law background required — trainings provided.

🏛️ STATE-LEVEL ADVOCACY

🩺 NJ RESIDENTS: Thank Your Legislators for Passing S. 2260/A. 2218

📍  L4GG.org/ThankNJ

New Jersey just built a firewall for healthcare providers. The Legislature passed S. 2260/A. 2218, a shield law protecting reproductive and transgender healthcare providers from out-of-state attacks. As other states and the federal government escalate efforts to criminalize legal healthcare beyond their own borders, New Jersey drew a clear line: providers here answer only to the laws that already govern them.

Here's how to say thank you:

  1. Look up your state legislators

  2. Check how they voted

  3. If they voted yes, send them a thank you in 2 minutes at L4GG.org/ThankNJ — the legal community should be the first to tell the lawmakers who passed this that we see what they did, we're grateful, and we stand ready to defend it

📱 CA RESIDENTS: Tell Your State Senator to Stop the Social Media Ban — A.B. 1709

📍 L4GG.org/StopTheBan

A.B. 1709 would ban everyone under 16 from social media — and to enforce it, platforms would push age verification on everyone, meaning adults could be forced to hand over a government ID or biometric data just to log in. Courts across the country have already struck down bans like this as unconstitutional. The bill is being fast-tracked through the state Senate this month.

As a lawyer, your voice carries real weight: tell your state Senator there's no "kid exception" to the First Amendment — and California shouldn't hand taxpayers the bill for defending a law that's unconstitutional on its face. Send your letter in 2 minutes at L4GG.org/StopTheBan.

📩 SHORT-TERM ENGAGEMENT

🏛️ Submit a Comment: Challenge the OMB Proposal Threatening Federal Grant Recipients

📍  Follow the steps below | Comment deadline: July 13

OMB and 41 other federal agencies have proposed a sweeping rule that would affect every organization receiving federal funding — nonprofits, universities, cities, state agencies, and Tribes. The rule would make it easier for agencies to terminate grants, limit issue advocacy, and weaponize the federal grant process against organizations that pursue entirely lawful activities.

  1. Register to access L4GG and EPN's comment training recording and resources

    1. Need help? Join L4GG and EPN's office hours on July 2 or July 9 for one-on-one support.

  2. Draft your comment and submit it via the Federal Register by July 13, 2026

  3. Let us know you submitted at L4GG.org/TrackComment

🛠️ LONG-TERM ENGAGEMENT

🌉 Building a Bridge to Freedom: Training on Challenging ICE Detention

📍L4GG.org/BridgetoFreedom | Wednesday, July 15 | 1:00–2:30 PM ET | Zoom

Since January 2025, over 65,000 people have been detained under the federal administration's mass deportation campaign — removed from their communities, cut off from legal resources, and forced to endure inhumane conditions. Join L4GG Litigation Director Amy Powell and National Lawyers Guild Director of Mass Defense Xavier T. de Janon for a training on how legal workers can respond — including the current pipelines leading to detention and an introduction to filing habeas petitions to free people from custody.

No immigration experience required. This session will be recorded and shared with all registrants. Register at L4GG.org/BridgetoFreedom

🎉 Community Impact: New Jersey Passes Its Shield Law

Last night, the New Jersey Legislature passed S2260/A2218 — a shield law protecting reproductive and transgender healthcare providers from out-of-state attacks. As other states escalate efforts to criminalize legal healthcare beyond their own borders, New Jersey drew a clear line: providers here answer only to the laws that already govern them, not to hostile actors reaching across state lines. It’s a firewall for patients and providers, and exactly the kind of legal infrastructure this moment demands.

Our team has been working on this bill for months — and when we asked the New Jersey lawyers in our community to contact their lawmakers, you showed up. Hundreds of you sent letters demanding these protections, and that pressure helped carry this bill across the finish line. This is what it looks like when legal voices show up for the communities that need them!

📅 Save the Date: L4GG's 10th Anniversary Convening — Feb 2027

The attorneys, advocates, and movement-builders who have shaped L4GG's first ten years are coming together — and we want you in the room. Join us in Washington, D.C. for a landmark convening to celebrate our community and build our next chapter. Sign up to be the first to know when registration opens. Your feedback shapes the programming.

We’ll be back next week with more ways to take action—but the work doesn’t stop here.
