Impact Docket – 7/30/25

The attacks on our democratic institutions are relentlessly accelerating. From unfit nominees being fast-tracked for powerful positions to Congress stalling on essential reforms, the systems meant to protect our rights are being reshaped to serve political interests instead of the public good.

This week’s Impact Docket gives you four concrete ways to fight back. Whether you have 2 minutes or 2 hours, we need your voice.

🔴 The Moment We're In: We're Still Here—And Still Fighting

Yesterday, Emil Bove was confirmed to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals—a lifetime appointment handed to a lawyer accused of instructing DOJ officials to openly defy court orders and retaliating against career prosecutors who resisted political interference. His confirmation signals another disturbing erosion of judicial independence, reinforcing a worrying trend toward a court system loyal to power, rather than the law.

But while anti-democratic appointments like Bove’s move forward, the broader fight is still very much alive. Across the country, thousands recently mobilized in "Good Trouble Lives On" protests, echoing the legacy of John Lewis and confronting ongoing assaults on voting rights, civil liberties, and judicial integrity. And at L4GG, our community continues to step up in powerful ways—including a new surge in volunteers for our Pro Bono Litigation Corps.

This week, we’re keeping the momentum alive. We’re fighting to block the dangerous nomination of Jeanine Pirro, pushing Congress to pass urgently needed reforms like the SCERT Act and the Voting Rights Advancement Act, and inviting passionate advocates to take a stand on Constitution Day.

We know the challenges are big. But so is our resolve, and every action we take today is building the stronger democracy we need tomorrow.

URGENT ACTIONS

⚖️ Tell Congress: Restore Voting Rights Now
📍 L4GG.org/VRAA | 2 min

The right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy, but since the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act in 2013, states have passed a flood of laws that suppress the vote, particularly for communities of color, young voters, and people with disabilities.

As one of the official organizational sponsors of this legislation, L4GG is proud to support the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would:

  • Restore the full protections of the Voting Rights Act

  • Reestablish federal review of discriminatory voting changes

  • Protect voters from being purged for missing elections

  • Expand same-day registration and improve access for marginalized voters

  • Give individuals real legal tools to fight voter suppression in court

Tell Congress to pass this act!

🚨 Tell the Senate: Reject Jeanine Pirro’s Nomination for D.C. U.S. Attorney
📍L4GG.org/RejectPirro | 2 min

Donald Trump has nominated Jeanine Pirro, a former Fox News host notorious for spreading conspiracy theories and defending Trump’s most dangerous actions—to serve as U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.

This role is one of the most powerful prosecutor positions in the country, and it requires integrity, impartiality, and experience. Pirro offers none of these. Instead, she has:

  • Promoted false claims about the 2020 election, undermining public trust in democracy

  • Justified the January 6th insurrection as a “fight for freedom”

  • Used her platform to defend Trump’s legal and political agenda at the expense of facts and law

The Senate must reject this nomination to protect the independence of the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the integrity of our justice system. Urge them to reject this dangerous nomination!

🛑 Demand Binding Ethics Rules for the Supreme Court
📍 L4GG.org/SCERT | 2 min

The Supreme Court has no binding code of conduct, despite multiple ethics scandals involving undisclosed gifts, political influence, and conflicts of interest.

The Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency (SCERT) Act would finally create real accountability by:

  • Requiring a binding code of ethics for justices

  • Establishing a process to investigate ethics complaints

  • Strengthening gift and travel disclosure requirements

  • Requiring justices to explain recusals—and ending the practice of ruling on their own conflicts

Public trust in the Court is crumbling. This legislation is a critical first step toward restoring accountability at the nation’s highest court. Tell Congress to pass the SCERT Act now!

🛠️ LONG-TERM ENGAGEMENT

📅 Constitution Day Rallies for the Rule of Law
📍 L4GG.org/ConstitutionDayInterest | 2 min

On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, the Nation of Laws coalition—of which Lawyers for Good Government (L4GG) is a proud member—is organizing nationwide Constitution Day events.

Constitution Day 2025 is a national day of action that calls on lawyers and the communities they serve to stand up for our founding principles.

In towns and cities across the country, these nonpartisan events will remind Americans that the Constitution protects all of us, belongs to all of us, and must be preserved by all of us. This moment will kick off a year-long campaign to educate, engage, and equip people—lawyers and non-lawyers alike—to defend the rule of law and strengthen constitutional democracy.

Join the movement! Host an event, spread the word, or participate in your way.
All registered events will be shared and searchable on this page soon.

🎉COMMUNITY IMPACT: From 80 to 400+—Pro Bono Litigation Corps Surges After National Spotlight

In just one week, our Pro Bono Litigation Corps grew from 80 dedicated attorneys to over 400 volunteer litigators—thanks to advocates like you. This surge followed national attention from The New York Times and Executive Director Traci Feit Love’s appearance on MSNBC with Nicolle Wallace, shining a spotlight on what we’ve built together.

The Pro Bono Litigation Corps is a collective stand against Trump’s campaign of retaliation against Big Law firms. Solo practitioners, retired attorneys, and small-firm litigators from our network are proving that when some law firms bow out, our community steps in.

This growth means we can take on more cases defending due process, challenging executive overreach, and protecting civil rights—fighting back in the courts where it matters most.Learn more and join us at: L4GG.org/PBLC
